President Donald Trump announced a bureaucratic shift on Friday to increase the power and independence of U.S. Cyber Command, giving the military unit more power to wage digital warfare against adversaries. For example, there is a Special Ops Command and Strategic Command.

18 a long-planned move to elevate Cyber Command to the status of a full combatant command.

The elevated command will "strengthen our cyberspace operations and create more opportunities to improve our Nation's defense", he said.

He also said the Secretary of Defense was looking into separating the Cyber Command from the National Security Agency so it stands on its own. Cyber Command's elevation reflects a push to strengthen US capabilities to interfere with the military programs of adversaries such as North Korea's nuclear and missile development and Islamic State's ability to recruit, inspire and direct attacks, three USA intelligence officials said this month, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The elevation will mark a significant evolution in the way the department organizes to execute cyberspace missions and comes as a direct result of the efforts of the entire DoD cyber workforce, officials say. Navy Adm. Mike Rogers now leads both Cybercom and NSA. The decision by Trump signals a recognition of the increasing importance of cyberspace operations to the American military.

Last year, former Defense Secretary Ashton Carter sent a proposal to then-President Barack Obama to make Cyber Command an independent military headquarters and separate it from the NSA.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed the move and applauded the administration's decision to defer a separation of NSA and CyberCom. "We must develop a clear policy and strategy for deterring and responding to cyber threats", he said in a statement. "We must also develop an integrated, whole-of-government approach to protect and defend the United States from cyberattacks", he said in a statement. Its new title will let CyberCom use computer networks for military purposes without having to get permission from the U.S. Strategic Command, which is responsible for nuclear weapons and missile defense.
