Ryanair's announcement last Friday that it would be cancelling up to 50 flights a day for six weeks has created huge uncertainty for its passengers.

The Italian antitrust authority on Wednesday opened a probe into Ryanair for alleged improper commercial practices over the Irish low-priced airline's mass cancellation of flights, including over 700 in Italy.

Ryanair's Kenny Jacobs said: "We apologise sincerely to each and every one of the 315,000 customers whose original flights were cancelled over a six week period in September and October, while we work to resolve this short term rostering failure".

Under EU legislation, passengers can claim compensation on top of a refund or alternative flight if aircraft have been grounded with less than two weeks' notice, with higher payouts of £354 available for longer flights.

Ryanair says it has reached out to all affected customers via email. You can check flight statuses here on their website as well apply for a refund or alternate flight.

Customers have been taking to the company's social media pages to say they've been cut off when trying to call customer services.

The airline said it had hired extra staff to help process the refund and re-booking requests - adding that it was on track to have resolved 95% of the work by the end of the week.

O'Leary admitted to a "mess up" over the recent wave of cancellations, saying they were caused by a transition to a new system of allocating leave to pilots.

In Italy, where Ryanair carries more passengers a year than any other airline, the antitrust agency is now looking into whether it has violated consumers' rights.

"Have I damaged Ryanair's reputation with these cancellations?"
