Watch Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve discuss the collaboration, along with a clip from the new film...

It seems likely that those papers and that phone call are how Ryan Gosling's character finds Bautista's character in the feature film-not an essential piece of information, but it's still cool to see. And now we have 2048: Nowhere to Run, the second of three shorts, this time showcasing Dave Bautista's replicant character Sapper. The first short, Blade Runner 2036, hinted at a major blackout event in the past that changed the course of the world.

Hailing from director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Animatrix) comes Blade Runner: Black Out 2022, a new prequel that's going to be animated in the visionary's signature style. We see a shadowy figure emerging from smoke and fire, and a hooded girl who is likely the protagonist of the short. It will tell a new story taking place between "Blade Runner" and "Blade Runner: 2049".

The teaser video shows behind-the-scenes footage of artists and animators working on the film. However, it will be released in Japan ahead of their October 27th release of Blade Runner 2049.

Based on pre-release surveys, the sequel to Ridley Scott's acclaimed 1982 science fiction classic could surpass the $40 million mark when it opens in theaters next month. Kotaku reported that Watanabe "adds that in making this short, he's keeping two things in mind: paying maximum respect to the original Blade Runner and trying not to create an imitation".

Over 35 years since Blade Runner came out, its sequel is nearly upon us.

Blade Runner 2022 is out in Japan on September 26.
