Fernando Llorente would have been an ideal fit, and scored just nine fewer goals than Lukaku in the Premier League last season, bagging 15.

Spurs were also hoping to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes on loan before Thursday's transfer deadline, sources said, but a deal could not be worked out in time.

The Spanish worldwide is familiar with Blues boss Antonio Conte, having worked with him during his spell at Juventus but has decided not to reunite with him.

FC reported earlier this week that Everton had made a late move for Llorente as they look to bring a new striker to Goodison Park, but Chelsea have always been favourites for the Spain global.

It was widely expected the Spanish striker would join Chelsea before the transfer window shuts tonight.

Spurs have reportedly spent £12.1 million for the 32-year-old Llorente and is having his medical examination done today.

Llorente won two Serie A titles during his time at Juventus while he also lifted the Europa League with Sevilla so he'll bring a winning mentality with him to north London.

The first player the Blues are targeting, as per the Guardian, is Swansea City's Fernando Llorente. However, they are now willing to do business with Wilfried Bony linked with a return to the Liberty Stadium.

Vincent Janssen is Tottenham's current stand-in striker, but the Dutchman has struggled to settle at the club and Pochettino is keen to land a proven Premier League frontman to accompany Kane.

They are understood to have made a bid for Llorente, but have been outbid by Spurs.
