Once a player received a shader in Destiny, they were able to apply it to any set of armor at any time. However, with everything that Bungie did right with the game, there is one thing that went horribly wrong: shaders. But as positive as the internet's reaction to the game has been, there is one issue that has a significant portion of the community up in arms. Destiny 2's shaders allow more customization by coloring individual armor pieces, but they are single-use items. Maybe you wanted a yellow hue instead of a blue one (or whatever else). Guild Wars 2 has cosmetic items called dyes which are virtually identical to Destiny 2's shaders. You know the drill. After completing the campaign, players can then pay a visit to Amanda Holliday, a vehicle vendor who also appeared in Destiny. With all the media coverage and Bungie's own advertisements and releases, one would think that such change would be disclosed pretty early on. The most popular is the thread calling for the boycott, which is nearing an incredible 40,000 upvotes as of this writing. Players can continue finding shaders across the game's worlds or purchase them with Silver purchased for real-money. "At that point, why even have them be consumable?" Additionally, once a player reaches level 20 (the max level), they will be rewarded with a Bright Engram every time they fill the experience bar.
The complaints revolve around bright engrams, which are essentially Destiny 2's version of loot crates and can only be bought with the in-game currency silver at a cost of 200 silver per engram. However, when all is said and done, it's clear that Bungie either thought that having frequent consumable drops was an improvement over rarer permanent rewards or purposely retooled shaders to fit into its microtransaction system in order to turn a profit. In particular, the change to the game's shader system has drawn the ire of the game's fans.
The look of your character in "Destiny 2" is a major part of the game, and new stuff is a main driving factor in what keeps people playing.
