The crane, perched on a building next to the federal prison, crashed down in downtown Miami, WSVN-TV reported.

The crane collapsed and fell into the top of a building under construction, said Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso. The typically vibrant and thriving streets of Miami look devastated as walls of gray waters flood the downtown area.

"We evacuate for storm surge, not wind", hurricane center storm surge specialist Jamie Rhome said.

When they reported to work Tuesday, Whiteman's crews began gathering ladders, windows, doors, lumber and metal studs into bundles heavy enough to resist the wind gusts. According to the Weather Channel, Miami had seen reports of gusts above 130 miles per hour with several reports in the 100 miles per hour range.

Emergency personnel were unable to respond because of high winds, Miami-Dade County Director of Communications Mike Hernandez said. "For us that was the storm of a lifetime, not twice in my lifetime please", he said. And Irma still isn't done.

The next major city to expect the hurricane is Naples, Florida, another popular vacation spot.

Miami Beach Mayor In His Office As Hurricane Irma Lashes Florida

"All the crane booms have been laid down [but] the crane on the barge at Lake Ivanhoe has been secured, tied back with steel cable, and anchored".

"I am very concerned about the west coast", Florida Governor Rick Scott told "Fox News Sunday".

"Tall structures are not particularly vulnerable except for damage from flying objects", Schofer said, "and fairly large objects will be boosted into the air with wind speeds like this".

Have you been following coverage of the storm? "Be prepared, listen to local evacuation advisories".

Clean-up teams were out at daybreak to clear the streets of debris, toppled traffic signals and downed trees left behind as the storm moved northwards and the floodwaters receded.

Petersburg area. Yet just because it avoided a direct hit doesn't mean Miami is not feeling the effects of Irma.
