IT Scores Box Office Records with Monster-Sized Opening Weekend

Movie Review It IT's Bill Skarsgard explains his Pennywise version and comparison with Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight!

The new movie, directed by Argentina's Andrés Muschietti, tells the story of a group of kids in the 1980s who face a malevolent clown called Pennywise.

This also goes to show, once more, that you don't have to throw the big bucks at a movie in order to see big rewards.

"It" also scored the second-highest domestic gross for an R-rated movie, after last year's "Deadpool".

"It" was initially projected to post a much lower debut weekend, however a stream of positive reviews, which included an 86 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, boosted the New Line and Warner Bros film's performance. The weekend take puts the film as the best opening since July's Spider-man: Homecoming.

The anticipated big screen adaptation of Stephen King's IT smashed records at the box office during its opening weekend. Andy Muschietti directs a script by Chase Palmer and Cary Fukunaga. With that in mind, it now ranks No. 7 for the MCU's domestic box office.

Horror movies don't usually land at the box office like this.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. had relatively modest expectations when it started making "It", which is why it spent only $35 million on production.

In a distant second place, this weekend is another newcomer, Home Again.

New Line's horror film "Annabelle: Creation" came in No. 4 despite competition from 'It, ' earning an estimated $4 million from 3,003 locations for a North American cume of $96.3 million.

If you're the type of film geek who treats box office returns like a spectator sport (it me), this is exciting stuff! Warner Bros. hopes to release the sequel in the fall of 2019.

The success of "It" also comes after an underperforming summer movie going season that left the year to date box office down 6.5 percent from last year. "That, along with the great ensemble cast of young actors and a movie that delivered on the promise of that marketing, made the film an astonishing over-performer".

But, what managed to allure the mass waves of attendees is the "universality of the fear of clowns", according to comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. Although It establishes the main character's fears, the film should've taken more time to develop majority.
