During the 2016 presidential election, Trump focused on Clinton's use of private emails, encouraging "lock her up!" chants and calling for an investigation into the email use.

Documents obtained by a FOIA request from the government watchdog group American Oversight reveal Ivanka Trump used a personal email account to conduct official government business.

Abbe Lowell, one of Kushner's lawyers, said in a statement that less than 100 emails have been sent to White House officials via this account since its creation in January.

Hillary Clinton hit back at Donald Trump's White House after The New York Times reported that at least six administration officials communicated about government business through private emails.

Sanders would not say whether the White House would release Kushner's private emails that dealt with government business.

Kushner did just that, Lowell said, noting that "all non-personal emails were forwarded to his official address, and all have been preserved, in any event".

New 6.1-magnitude quake shakes Mexico
More than 300 people have been reported killed in Tuesday's quake; almost 100 reportedly died in the September 8 temblor. Civil Defense chief Luis Felipe Puente sent out a tweet on Saturday saying 167 of those deaths were in Mexico City .

News of Ivanka Trump's private email use comes as Kushner, who has been an official White House adviser since the beginning of the administration, faces questions over what he discussed with his non-government communication, which is not subject to the same transparency requirements.

Since January, Kushner's interlocutors have included former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former chief strategist Steve Bannon, National Economic Council director Gary Cohn, and spokesman Josh Raffel.

Ivanka Trump sent an email on February 28 to Linda McMahon, the head of the Small Business Administration, asking her agency to "explore opportunities to collaborate" on issues related to "women's entrepreneurship", Newsweek reported, citing documents the nonprofit American Oversight group obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and shared with the news magazine.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation closed its investigation into Clinton's handling of classified information and recommended no charges. It also reflects a tendency of current White House staff to rely much more on private messaging instead of government supplied accounts.

The private account in question was reportedly set up in December, during the transition.

Former FBI Director James Comey said that though Clinton and her aides were "extremely careless" in their handling of classified material, there was no evidence that anyone meant to break the law, and he recommended against criminal prosecution.
