Buildings have been seriously damaged in Mexico City after a 7.1 magnitude quake shook central Mexico.
Traditionally, Mexico City commemorates the 1985 catastrophe with a huge drill involving millions of citizens, who were caught on Tuesday reacting to a real natural disaster.
The AP reported that the governor of Morelos says 42 people have died in his central Mexican state following the quake.
The tremor comes on the day Mexico City commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the most destructive shake that the city experienced in the 80s with preparation drills held earlier in the day in buildings across the city.
Videos purported to show buildings shaking under the strain, and The New York Times reports that a whole office building collapsed in the neighborhood of Roma Norte. Thousands of people on the capital's main boulevard streamed out of buildings and into the street in panic, The Associated Press reported.
Moderate shaking - or intensity 5 shaking - is defined by the USGS as "felt by almost everyone; many awakened".
The new quake appears to be unrelated to the magnitude 8.1 temblor that hit September 7 off Mexico's southern coast and which also was felt strongly in the capital.
"We got out really fast, leaving everything as it was and just left", said Rosaura Suarez, as she stood with a crowd on the street.
Mexico City's worldwide airport says it has suspended operations due to the magnitude 7.1 quake that shook the central part of the country.
There were no reports of damage.
The quake's center was determined to be east of Mexico City in the state of Puebla. Clouds of dust rose from fallen pieces of facades. Its epicenter was in the state of Puebla, about 80 miles southeast of the capital, Mexico City. Officials were running quake drills earlier in the day.
