Nashville Statement: Conservative Christians Release Manifesto Of Hate

One of the initial 100 signatories, Jayne Ozanne, a General Synod member, said: "It is very telling that within hours of the Nashville Statement being released, Christians United gathered twice as many signatories from church leaders who endorsed a far more affirming, loving, and inclusive set of articles that embraces the LGBTI community".

"A predominantly white male coalition of Southern Baptists and Evangelicals have defined human sexuality in the binary that secures their power, with a selective tortured reading of the Bible texts on human sexuality from a time when a woman was her husband's property", said Bishop Yvette Flunder, HRC Foundation's Religion Council member and Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship.

Boyce Christian College Professor Denny Burk, one of the statement's authors, is quoted by Baptist News saying "The aim of the Nashville Statement is to shine a light into the darkness - to declare the goodness of God's design in our sexuality and in creating us as male and female".

Part of the marketing challenge comes from the fact that the Nashville Statement was created by the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, a 30-year-old organization that is well known among many conservative evangelicals but whose name will probably befuddle the typical American.

One of the most discussed elements of the Nashville Statement among evangelicals is something called Article 10. It contains 14 beliefs, referred to as articles.

However, violence broke out as opposition activists cried foul in days of unrest which claimed the lives of at least 28 people. During the ruling, Maraga said the court found no evidence of misconduct on the part of the third respondent who is Kenyatta.

The meeting was organized by the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW), and those responsible for the statement are defending it as important for helping with so-called "confusion" about sexuality.

- Ted Lieu (@tedlieu)I'm grateful for the graciousness of the Nashville Statement as well as its clarity & orthodoxy.

"We believe that same-sex relationships and marriages are as holy before God as heterosexual marriages", one such statement reads.

It specifically rejects the morality of same-sex marriage and the possibility that a person could be transgender, all while reaffirming a commitment to traditional gender roles for men and women. It acknowledges the reality of same-sex attraction as well as the reality of transgender self-conceptions, but denies that God sanctions same-sex sexual activity or a transgendered self-conception that is at odds with biological reality.

"They used Nashville in the context, and that's not our Nashville", Barry said. Christians United is an effort to show just how many worldwide Christian leaders, theologians, and lay people stand firmly against the sin of exclusion and are ready to swing open the doors of our churches to embrace absolutely everyone. It lists 14 beliefs, including a rejection of the idea that marriage can be homosexual, polygamous, or polyamorous, or that people can be identified as anything other than male or female according to the reproductive organs with which they were born. Anyone who persistently rejects God's revelation about sexual holiness and virtue is rejecting Christianity altogether, even if they claim otherwise.

Article 13 reads that, "We affirm that the grace of God enables sinners to forsake transgender self-conceptions" but denies that the "grace of God in Christ sanctions self-conceptions" that are against "God's revealed will". He added, "We are pleased to offer this statement as a faithful expression of Christian conviction in a secular age". Believing that, and not sharing it with people who have an opportunity to change the way they live, would be wrong, Whitfield said.
