Since then, the two started dating. The experience even "deepened our relationship", he told reporters in Tokyo on Sunday (via Japan Times).

"Together with Mr. Komuro, I would like to make a warm and peaceful family that is full of smiles", Princess Mako announced after the Emperor approved of their engagement during a ceremony Sunday morning.

Under a controversial Japanese law female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a commoner, whereas male members do not.

However while it may be joyous news for the young princess and her love, it means that she will no longer be considered a member of the royal family after walking down the aisle.

Over time, Princess Mako said she learned he is "a honest, strong-minded, hard worker, and he has a big heart". "While I worked to help the emperor and fulfil duties as a royal family member as much as I can, I've been cherishing my own life".

The couple had a long-distance relationship while studying overseas - Princess Mako in Britain and Mr Komuro in the US - for one year. She is pursuing a doctorate and works as a museum researcher.

Although Komuro, 25, is not a royal, he was once dubbed the "Prince of the Sea".

Trump visited the region on Saturday for the second time after an initial trip there last Tuesday. Greg Abbott said Friday that there is a healthy amount of fuel in the state - and in the nation.

Komuro, a resident of Yokohama, is working at a Tokyo law firm as well as studying business law at the Hitotsubashi University Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy.

The news conference followed the Imperial Household Agency's official announcement of their engagement the same day.

But the announcement was postponed because heavy rain and flooding hit the northern part of the Kyushu region in early July, with Princess Mako and Komuro worrying about the situation in areas afflicted by the disaster and feeling sympathy for affected people. This is called the traditional rite of betrothal called Nosai no Gi.

Mako and Komuro, both 25, expressed great joy over the engagement and Emperor Akihito's approval, during a press conference held at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo, Efe news reported.

Princess Mako of Akishino is the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito from his second son, Prince Akishino. It will be the first royal wedding in Japan since Princess Noriko married in 2014.

The elder daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko is a popular figure in Japan, with Wikipedia describing her as "something of an internet idol since 2004" largely thanks to her fashion choices.
