Qantas had made Dubai its hub for European flights under a 10-year deal it agreed with Emirates in 2012, as Qantas's loss-making global division struggled.

The new deal will see Australia's national airline re-route its Sydney to London A380 service via Singapore and upgrade its existing Melbourne to Singapore flight from an A330 to an A380 from March 25.

Including flights from Brisbane and Perth that fly to Singapore, Qantas will operate 49 weekly services in total from Singapore to Australia and London, with a total of over 17,600 one-way seats each week.

The airlines said the changes were created to "reflect customer demand, new aircraft technology and each airline's respective network strengths".

Australia is among Changi Airport's top five country markets in terms of passenger traffic, with more than 5.5 million passengers travelling between Singapore and Australia annually, according to the Singapore airport.

"The first five years of the Qantas-Emirates alliance has been a great success", Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said.

Qantas will return to Changi Airport from March 25 - five years after moving to Dubai as a stopover for its Australia-Europe flights.

"Emirates altogether get 1.6 million passengers from Qantas on their entire network". We see an opportunity to offer customers an even stronger product proposition for travel to Dubai, and onward connectivity to our extensive network in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Qantas last week announced plans for non-stop flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to London and NY by 2022 which will eliminate the need to stop in either Singapore or Dubai. "We will announce updates in the coming weeks", he adds.

"The partnership has given huge benefits to a lot of customers, it's opened up a lot more options for customers and it continues to do it with this". The alliance is conditional on Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) approval.

Customers with existing bookings impacted by the changes will be re-accommodated onto the airlines' new services or will be given the option to change their flights. "By pulling out of Singapore they basically forsook that whole thing; this transforms things incredibly", said Peter Harbison, a former Australian aviation trade negotiator and chairman of consultancy CAPA.

The existing Melbourne-Singapore flight will move from an A330 to an A380. The second Singapore -Sydney daily service will continue to be operated by an A330 aircraft.

Customers can access over 2,000 routes over the joint network.
