South Koreans doubt North Korea will start war

UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting over N Korea Amid diplomatic row, Putin denies disappointment with Trump: 'He is not my bride. I am not his groom.'

He said it wouldn't significantly strengthen nuclear deterrence and might spark protests in South Korea that weaken its USA alliance. No mention was made of other retaliatory measures, such as the possible use of force.

Now, as the United States seeks to inflict much sharper pain by cutting off North Korea's oil imports and textile exports, Mr. Putin's warnings suggest he has concluded that his interests and those of U.S. President Donald Trump are diverging.

Putin also called for the re-implementation of global law and dialogue among concerned parties over the North Korea issue.

The White House on Wednesday released details of calls Tuesday with British Prime Minister Theresa May and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Celebrating its founding anniversary, a front-page editorial of the Saturday edition of North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun said the country should make "more high-tech Juche weapons to continuously bring about big historical events such as a miraculous victory of July 28".

Moon may well be quietly admiring of Putin for saying things upfront about North Korea which he is unable to do himself.

"He (Trump) is not my bride, and I am not his groom", Putin said, reports New York Times.

Former Japanese defence minister Shigeru Ishiba stoked controversy on Wednesday by questioning whether Japan can expect protection under the USA nuclear umbrella while maintaining its non-nuclear principles.

South Korea's Defence Ministry said the four remaining batteries of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system would be deployed on a golf course in the south of the country on Thursday.

Throughout the week, South Korean officials have warned the North could launch another intercontinental ballistic missile, in defiance of U.N. sanctions and amid an escalating standoff with the United States.

"South Korea may face the most complex strategic environment in Asia", write Sung Chull Kim and Michael D. Cohen, editors of a new collection of scholarly essays titled "North Korea and Nuclear Weapons: Entering the New Era of Deterrence". The tweet followed Trump giving South Korean President Moon Jae-in an "in-principle approval" for weapons with less restrictions and more powerful warheads.

In the past few weeks, Mr Moon has sought stronger warheads on ballistic missiles, stepped up military drills, discussed the deployment of United States strategic bombers to South Korea and embraced a missile defence system he had questioned.

North Korea has ratcheted up worldwide tension and fear with its sixth and largest nuclear test on Sunday, but South Koreans feel increasingly doubtful it would start a war, a poll showed on Friday.

A THAAD battery normally consists of six launchers capable of firing up to 48 interceptor missiles, but only two launchers have been operational so far.

Russian Federation and China opposed the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, system, saying it has the potential of fueling an arms race.

The Russian president also weighed in on the North Korea situation, saying the putting pressure on the hermit nation would be useless. He said it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement".

The big question is whether there was some form of contact between the delegations of North and South Korea on the sidelines of the EEF conference in Vladivostok.

In a riposte, Ri said: "They busied themselves. making preposterous remarks like "the nuclear missile of North Korea are military means that can strike Europe".

Sunday's test of what North Korea said was an advanced hydrogen bomb was its largest by far. Prime Minister Abe is expected to hold another meeting with Putin in November.

However Russian President Vladimir Putin said Pyongyang couldn't be intimidated and brushed off a renewed call for tighter sanctions by his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-In as the three were in the Russian port city of Vladivostok for an economic forum.

But after North Korea conducted its second flight test of a developmental intercontinental ballistic missile in July, Moon ordered his military to work with USA commanders in South Korea to temporarily place more launchers before the reviews are conducted.
