Getting fired (or stepping down over creative differences) from one of the movies doesn't look good because it gives the impression that you couldn't swing it, even if the director genuinely just couldn't mesh with those overseeing the franchise.
This summer has not been kind to the directors aligned to the Star Wars universe.
Yesterday, news broke that Jurassic World'sColin Trevorrow is no longer at the helm of Episode IX, the last installment of the new trilogy of films that grew out of Lucasfilm'sDisney era. Nothing - not switching to Howard as the new director, not recasting characters, not even reshooting extensive chunks of the film - can stop it. A big reason for that is because the current fandom for "Star Wars" is beyond anything the franchise has ever experienced before, and it seems everyone can't get enough information, whether it's rumors or facts.
As with Lord and Miller, best known for The Lego Movie (2014) and 22 Jump Street (2014), the ouster of Trevorrow was draped in Hollywood's usual public relations niceties. "Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ", the statement reads. Lucasfilm hasn't announced a replacement for Trevorrow.
In June, Lucasfilm sacked directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("21 Jump Street", "The Lego Movie"), who were just weeks away from wrapping principal photography on the hotly-anticipated Han Solo spinoff.
Barely two months after the dismissal of Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the duo who was in charge of implementing the spin-off devoted to the youth of Han Solo and who has chose to leave the ship in full production, it is the turn of Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) from. It's weird, it guarantees most of the Han Solo movie is hot wacky garbage and it makes those of us on planet nerd scream IT'S A STAR WARS MOVIE, HOW HARD IS THIS, and by "scream" I mean "cleverly tweet" because that's the only way we can work out emotions.
News of the decision sparked a frenzy of speculation on social media over who might be handed Trevorrow's job, as well as plenty of pithy barbs on the high turnover of Lucasfilm directors. Stars Wars: Episode XI is pencilled in to arrive in cinemas on 24 May 2019, with The Last Jedi hitting our screens later this year. The film now has a May, 2019 release date.
