Giro d' Italia champion Tom Dumoulin won the time trial world title on Wednesday, beating runner-up Primoz Roglic and Tour de France and Vuelta de Espana victor Chris Froome to cap a remarkable season.

Just ahead of the closing climb, the 3.4-kilometre Mount Floyen which began with a series of tight hairpin bends, numerous riders who were out on the course early made a decision to switch from their time trial bike to a road bike.

Froome, who 10 days ago completed a Tour-Vuelta double, seemed a little off the pace at the beginning.

Many people believe the climb will nearly certainly rule out the more regular powerhouse racers against the clock leaving Froome, Giro d'Italia champion Tom Dumoulin, Australia's Rohan Dennis and Ilnur Zakarin of Russian Federation to battle for honours.

Four-time world champion Tony Martin could finish only ninth as the punishing final 3.4km climb to the finish of the 31km course penalised the powerful German.

"I've never medalled in the worlds before so it's an fantastic end to what's been an unforgettable season for me", said Froome, who picked up his fourth Tour title in July before his first Vuelta crown 10 days ago.

He was one of the fastest men up it and managed to snare third place, adding to his bronze medals in the time-trial at the last two Olympic Games. "I felt really, really good".

"I thought the power meter was off because it was so high!"

It started to rain for Dumoulin's ride, but that hardly slowed him down.

Froome has already enjoyed an incredible year, winning the Tour de France for the fourth time and Vuelta a Espana for the first time. The only Grand Tour he missed out on was the Giro, won by Dumoulin. But Froome's attention has been diverted from his final race of 2017 to questions about his nationality.

"I'm glad I'm here, I gave it everything I had and I'm happy with the effort I gave today".

The finishing climb to the course in Bergen meant the race favoured good climbers and Dumoulin was expected to face stiff competition from Froome and Rohan Dennis of Australia.

So dominant was his performance, the Dumoulin nearly caught Froome, finishing nine seconds behind having begun with a 90 second gap between them. "I'm going to take it kilometre by kilometre and see how it goes".

The victory is the first rainbow jersey for Dumoulin who looked strong throughout the race.
