"It's easy to classify computer science as tech to enable getting a job in Silicon Valley or New York", Ms. Trump said in an interview, "but the reality is that computer skills and coding is relevant and foundational for every sector and every industry across the economy and tech is increasingly the way we work".

Explore administrative actions that will add or increase focus on Computer Science in existing K-12 and post-secondary programs.

On the second panel, Ivanka Trump offered a nod to how computer science skills can prepare students for career pathways straight out of high school.

"The directives I am sharing today, with Secretary DeVos at the helm, to make STEM education, including computer science, a priority for the Department of Education".

She'll be in Detroit on Tuesday to announce commitments from the private sector meant to "boost US coding and computer-science classes".

Mr. Trump's memorandum on the financing did not guarantee that $200 million in annual grants would go entirely toward computer science education.

Ivanka, who specializes in workforce development at the White House, is expected to head to Detroit on Tuesday where she will meet with leaders from the technology sector, including executives from Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), and Google (GOOGL), according to Recode.

The announcement will be formally made during an event in Detroit, featuring the president's daughter; Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO Marillyn Hewson; Quicken Loans Chairman Dan Gilbert; Salesforce.org CEO Rob Acker; Code.org CEO Hadi Partovi; and Beckerman. Representatives from Amazon, Facebook, Google, GM, and Quicken Loans will be in attendance, among others.

According to a press release, the money will be donated over the course of five years.

According to his organization, there are more than 500,000 computing jobs open nationally across multiple business sectors, but about 50,000 computer science graduates annually in the U.S.

"Currently, more than half of high schools do not offer computer programming, and almost 40 per cent do not offer physics", Trump said. The funds will be spent on a nationwide computer science curriculum beginning in the 2018 fiscal year.

The move seeks to address a lack of access to resources necessary to providing high-quality education in STEM and computer sciences.

He signed a memorandum boosting STEM education funding in the Oval Office surrounded by members of his Cabinet, Congress and some 50 schoolchildren. Officials said they hope to encourage the participation of young girls and minorities in particular.
