Just before Ri spoke at the United Nations, the Pentagon disclosed that the U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers flew in global airspace east of North Korea.

The mission was revealed just before North Korea's Ri Yong Ho addressed the UN.

Trump called Kim a "madman" on Friday, a day after the North Korean leader dubbed him a "mentally deranged U.S. dotard" in retaliation for the United States president saying Washington would "totally destroy" the Asian country if it threatened the USA or its allies. Ri said Trump himself was on a "suicide mission" after the USA president had said Kim was on such a mission. Speaking at the rally, a Pyongyang official said the people of the capital were "aflame" with the desire to wipe their sworn enemy, the US imperialists, off the globe.

"Through such a prolonged and arduous struggle, now we are finally only a few steps away from the final gate of completion of the state nuclear force", he said.

"Our national nuclear force is, to all intents and purposes, a war deterrent for putting an end to nuclear threat of the U.S. and for preventing its military invasion, and our ultimate goal is to establish the balance of power with the USA".

US Air Force bombers and fighter jets have flown off North Korea's coast in what the Pentagon has called a "clear message".

White says "we are prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the USA homeland and our allies".

"The most probable hypothesis now is that it is the effect of the previous event... which could still have further repercussions", Mr Zerbo told the AFP news agency, referring to North Korea's massive nuclear test on 3 September.

The North carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September.

Earlier this month, two B-1B Lancer bombers and four US F-35B Lightning II stealth jets flew, along with South Korea's F-15K Slam Eagle fighter jets, near the DMZ that separates South and North Korea. Previous shows of force with bombers have stayed south of the demilitarized zone.

But it was later ruled by a nuclear test ban watchdog and other experts to be a shallow 3.5-magnitude quake and likely an aftershock from the hermit state's latest nuclear test on September 3. The last registered as a magnitude 6.3.

The move will further increase tensions on the Korean peninsula amid a growing nuclear crisis.

The show of force follows a contentious week in which Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un exchanged personal barbs over North Korea's nuclear ambitions. Former President Barack Obama made similar comments during his administration when he said the U.S.

"North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile development is a grave threat to peace and security in our world and it is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal, rogue regime", Mr Trump said as he joined Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a meeting in NY.

The agenda includes meetings with the former Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Foreign Minister of Japan.
