During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump appropriated terrorist sensitivity and assured that if it had been under his rule, "those people who brought down the World Trade Center, would not have been here to do it", and that he would be " smarter" than his predecessor in dealing with terrorism.

"Those who try will soon join the long list of vanquished enemies who dared to test our mettle", he said, as a drone of jet engines carried echoes of a day half a generation ago that many Americans have vowed not to forget.

"The sacrifice grounds on which we stand today are a monument to our national unity and to our strength", he said, adding that "for more than seven decades, the Pentagon has stood as a global symbol of American might".

"The horror and anguish of that dark day were seared into our national memory forever", the president said of the almost 3,000 people who perished in the coordinated attacks in Manhattan, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Around 3,000 were when terrorists led by Osama Bin Laden crashed planes in to New York's World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a rural Pennsylvania field in 2001. "And we will never, ever yield".

A solemn memorial was held in Washington to commemorate the victims and families of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, which killed 2,997 people and injured more than 6,000.

The president, who was running his family's real estate empire in 2001, at first praised President George W. Bush's response to the attacks, initially supporting the invasion of Iraq before turning sharply against the war and Mr.

"Today, our entire nation grieves with you", Trump said.

"It was an wonderful phone call", Trump said.

Both the president and vice president also included in their 9/11 remembrance remarks messages of solidarity for victims of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, which battered Florida and Texas among other states.

Bossert said Trump intends to continue the practice of receiving a briefing about the terrorist environment on September 11, a custom started by President George W. Bush and continued under President Barack Obama. Trump has not provided the names of those he knew who perished in the attack, but has mentioned knowing a Catholic priest who died while serving as a chaplain to the city's fire department.

Trump last month issued the sternest warning yet by an American leader to Pakistan for providing safe havens to terrorists that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has "much to lose" by harbouring them. There is no evidence in news archives of mass celebrations there by Muslims.
