The agency's spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said Tuesday that evacuees are spread across more than 370 locations on the island and their numbers are continuing to rise.

Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level status for Mt. Agung in Bali to level 4, the highest classification, signifying the possibility of a volcanic eruption.

The Agung volcano had last erupted in 1963 and at that time it had caused the deaths of 1,100 people.

Kasbani, the head of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), told media that if tremors continued, an eruption could be a "matter of hours" away.

Thousands of people have been evacuated on the Indonesian island of Bali and on Ambae island in Vanuatu as two volcanoes threaten to erupt.

Officials have said that 122,490 people have left in fear and there are 500 makeshift shelters, the government said that they were prepared despite the rise in people evacuating the area.

On February 18, 1963, local residents reported a loud explosion and smoke coming out of the mountain top.

An elderly woman who survived that eruption said evacuation instructions had come much earlier this time.

He says more than 560 volcanic earthquakes were recorded on Monday, majority shallow.

"Back then we weren't evacuated until it got really risky".

The mountain, which sits about 70 kilometers northeast of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Of course, Indonesia, with more than 100 active volcanoes, is no stranger to preparing for the increased seismic activity.

Both countries are evacuating amid fears of imminent volcanic eruptions and they urge several countries, including Australia and Singapore, to issue travel advisories.

How big is Mount Agung?

The Philippine embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia advised Filipinos traveling to or residing in Bali to remain vigilant as the volcano on the tourist island continues to rumble.

Ngurah Rai International Airport remains open but is on alert in case of ash disruption, and there are plans to bus people to other airports, if needed.
