House panel to consider children's health measure

Senator Orrin Hatch speaks to reporters after the Senate approved $15.25 billion in aid for areas affected by Hurricane Harvey in Washington Preserve vital health insurance program for children

Unfortunately for the roughly 36 million people who now rely on the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the date scheduled for markup of the legislation falls after the initiative expires.

The Children's Health Insurance Program, (CHIP), now provides health insurance coverage to over 9 million American children and pregnant women from low-income working families.

Advocacy groups have said it would be much easier if the House just takes up the Senate's stand-alone proposal, because there's always a temptation to weigh down CHIP with extraneous provisions.

The state budget assumes federal funding for CHIP will continue.

In anticipation of a delay in funding, a number of states began to dial back outreach last month.

On the heels of the Senate's latest health care failure another important deadline is about to expire in Congress, this one affecting the youngest Americans.

Sen. Chris Coons said he hopes Congress will move quickly to authorize the program. At 200 percent of the poverty level, these families are above the financial guidelines to receive Medicaid.

"So, I'm hopeful that they'll get it done", he said. By providing an anchor within the health care system, CHIP coverage gives children and families access to vital preventive services and helps protect families' economic security.

Congress is expected to miss the September 30 deadline to renew the funds, but may take up the program next week.
