I have been absent from contributing to the CBS Blog Poll in the last weeks of the season, so to start 2010 off I am here to provide my final ballot for the CBS Blog Poll Top 25.

Let us break down my Top 25 one section at a time…

I have no problem rewarding Boise State with high accolades. The bottom line is they finished with 14 wins. I know Texas fans will say that the Longhorns should not have been passed over by the Broncos because Colt McCoy was knocked out of the game. Yes, Texas had to change their scheme with Garrett Gilbert in taking snaps, but Texas blew their chances to win right in the first quarter when they could not capitalize on two costly Alabama miscues on the first two possessions.

Despite losing their head coach to Notre Dame before the Sugar Bowl I feel that Cincinnati showed me nothing to warrant staying above two loss Iowa and Penn State. Both Iowa and Penn State demonstrated what a top defense can do to win a game in their bowl games. Still, I could not justify dropping TCU below either Big Ten team.

I will have to spend some time checking out exactly what Nebraska and Pittsburgh bring back in 2010, but I can see both making a run for the BCS next season. The Huskers look to have some momentum going on inside the program, especially on defense, and the Panthers have some young talent that can take charge in games. Playing in the Big East helps.

Here is a look at the rest of my top 25.

So that’s my final ballot. Let me know what you like and what you do not like down below.

Dropped Out: Southern Cal (#19), California (#23).

Well, the regular season is now completely behind us (fine, there’s still Army-Navy, but as far as meaningful regular season games go, we’re through), and it’s been a pretty entertaining season. The one thing we were lacking, though, was the big upset. Florida, Texas, and Alabama were among the top teams in the country at the start of the season, and now two of those teams will be playing in the championship game while the third team is still in the Sugar Bowl. Sure, you had Purdue taking down Ohio State, Washington beating USC, and BYU shocking Oklahoma, but none of those games occurred late enough in the year–or to a legitimate enough contender–to really count as memorable. Where was the Ole Miss over Florida, the Pitt surprising West Virginia, the Iowa shocking Penn State to send shockwaves through the NCAA? This was a good year for college football, but frankly, it just wasn’t that fun. There were few, if any, memorable games, and even the Alabama-Florida matchup didn’t come close to living up to the hype. I bet Alabama will bury Texas, too, capping off an entirely forgettable season of college football. Think about this for a sec: if it wasn’t for a generous replay review, the lasting memory of the 2009 College Football season would’ve been Colt McCoy nonchalantly throwing away his national championship chance along with the ball as the seconds ticked off the clock in the Big XII Championship Game.

Seeing as very little actually happened last week (you can see that 15 of the 25 teams in my ballot are in the exact same spot as they were a week ago), I think it would be interesting to revisit some of my preseason predictions. I had Texas at 1 and Alabama at 14 (though I did jump the Tide up to #5 after the first week). I swung and missed with USC and Oklahoma at #3 and #4 (but so did most of the country), but I’m very proud of ranking Oregon and Boise State at #6 and #8 in the preseason, off by just a couple of spots from their end of year slots. Same goes for Ohio State, who I had at 7 over the summer. I’ll also take credit for predicting big seasons out of Oregon State (19) and TCU (17), though I certainly couldn’t have expected this much success out of the Horned Frogs. And I was selling early on everyone else’s darling Hokies, ranking them at #15 in the preseason.

Yet, there are just as many epic failures on my part, starting with the most obvious one: Illinois at 20. Yes, I’m well aware that the Illini went 3-9. So much for fortune favoring the bold. I ranked Rutgers at 18, and they finished 3-4 in the Big East, losing to Syracuse (shut up, I know Northwestern did too). I ranked 7-5 Georgia at #21, but that was lower than the majority of voters, so I won’t kill myself over that one. But I definitely went out on a limb with Notre Dame at #13, and for that I should be ashamed.

After Florida and Alabama, there isn’t another really good team in the whole conference. You’ll notice we have LSU down at 21, and while they’re #13 in the BCS rankings, they don’t even come close to passing the eye-test.

Hey, gang. Sorry we’ve been so sporadic with the updates. I can’t speak for Charlie or Kevin, but I slipped into a tryptophan induced coma after Thanksgiving dinner, and just woke up about 6 hours ago.

Because it’s so late in the week, we’ll just give you some bullet points about this week’s blogpoll.

The SEC Sucks: Okay, that’s a stretch, but The SEC is Incredibly Top Heavily and Lacking in Depth didn’t have the same ring to it. After Florida and Alabama, there isn’t another really good team in the whole conference. You’ll notice we have LSU down at 21, and while they’re #13 in the BCS rankings, they don’t even come close to passing the eye-test. Since the computers can’t register margin of victory, they get by with a 8-point win over Louisiana Tech, a 4-point win over Mississippi State, and an 8-point win over Washington. After watching them struggle against Arkansas, it’s clear that Jordan Jefferson is a mediocre, at best, QB, and I’m salivating for a chance to beat them in the Capital One Bowl. Which we’ll be going to. Almost certainly.

The Big XII Sucks: Texas and…nobody else. Nebraska sneaks into the ballot at 22, but they’ve been so up-and-down all year that I don’t know what to make of them. We’ve ranked them as high as #16 (I think), but after getting curbstomped 31-10, at home, to Texas Tech, they’ve taken a seat. Now, they’ve won what might be the worst division ever, and get the courtesy of getting beat up by Texas on Saturday. And other voters-how the hell can you have Oklahoma State ranked, much less at 20, AFTER BEING SHUT OUT 27-0 TO A 7-5 OKLAHOMA TEAM?

The ACC Sucks: I think you guys are starting to get the hang of this. After clinching spots in the ACC Championship Game, Georgia Tech and Clemson drew matchups with their biggest out-of-conference rivals last week, and both laid a massive egg. So much for taking things one game at a time. I really have no idea why I’m so lenient with dropping them a combined 7 spots, but it’s probably because I think they’re still good teams. Nonetheless, you did a bad job representing your conference, GT and Clemson. Be ashamed of yourselves.

The Big East Kinda Sucks?: We’ve had two Big East teams ranked in the top 10 for the last few weeks, and even with Pitt falling to their rivals, West Virginia, in the backyard brawl, they’ll still stay in the top 12 here. But Cincy takes a slight drop after struggling with Illinois, and West Virginia sneaks in after that upset of Pitt. I’m actually very excited for the de facto Championship game this weekend, because the two teams are just so different. And sorry, Bill S., but NWO is rooting for Cincy.

The Pac-10 Doesn’t Suck: You know this by now, but with USC earning their place back on the ballot, and Cal getting on because finding 25 teams is pretty damn hard, the Pac-10 now makes up fully 1/5 of our Blogpoll ballot, and Toby Gerhart would be NittanyWhiteOut’s Heisman selection. Stanford has been, simply, a joy to watch this year, and as much as I have an unrequited love for white running backs, Toby Gerhart is the real deal. I’ve become a believer in Jim Harbaugh, and I just pray that Michigan doesn’t steal him away from the Cardinal, because that would instantly restore all the credibility that RichRod lost.

The Big Ten is Whatever: This is what you get for ending your season so early Big Ten. Two sentences. Well, addendum: I like Northwestern and Mike “Franz” Kafka. So I rank them at #18. Sorry to offend you, Brian.

Dropped Out: Mississippi (#17), North Carolina (#18), Utah (#19), Oklahoma State (#21), Temple (#25).

Say what you will about this week’s lineup of marquee rivalry games: Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State and Pitt-West Virginia are just a handful of the bad-blood matchups slated to be renewed on Saturday–but the fact is, I really couldn’t care less.

You see, Penn State just completed its Big Ten schedule, and I’m more than willing to put football on hold until late December, when we get to see some good Bowl matchups. This week, I’m celebrating Thanksgiving with my family, and when I fly home Saturday, I won’t mind the fact that I’m missing college football, not one bit. After twelve weeks of screaming and cheering, whether I was at the games or not, I guess I’m just all footballed out. Penn State’s season is over–it’s bowl placement out of its hands–and I’ve got no other team worth wasting three hours over and rooting for.

Yeah, I can say that all I want, but that doesn’t make it true. I’m as excited as anyone to see how the conference races in the ACC, Pac-10, and Big East shake out, and Alabama-Florida in a couple weeks promises to be the game of the year. And as I’ve started to study the BCS selection procedure, I’ve come to understand the implications of even seemingly meaningless games, like Texas-Texas A&M, because as we’ve come to learn all season, no game is a given win for any team.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at my Week 13 Blogpoll ballot.

You’ll see that TCU has made the jump up to #2, and that’s not a protest vote or anything. I’ve just recently had the chance to watch them play on a couple different occasions, and I strongly considered putting the Horned Frogs at number one. They are a complete football team that can hang with anyone, and when they inevitable get snubbed in the BCS Champinship Game, will lay a 2008-Utah level (and for that matter, 2004 Utah, too) level beating on whatever poor soul is unlikely enough to meet them in the Fiesta or Orange or Sugar Bowl. I really hope it’s not us. Our offensive line wouldn’t stand a chance against Jerry Hughes, and even the Penn State defense would have trouble slowing down the balanced TCU attack. I honestly believe that this TCU team is the finest team to ever come from a non-BCS conference, and would go down in history among the all-time great teams if they were in the Big XII, who frankly, could use a team other than Texas that’s any good.

The ACC mess is too complicated for me to even try figuring out. Virginia Tech, Miami, UNC, and Clemson all stand at 8-3, and though UNC beat the Vols and Canes, they’re probably not as good a football team. Though I strive for consistency (you’ll note that Iowa is ranked above Penn State), I had to suspend my own rules in this case. Sorry, UNC, but I’ve seen you play too much to put you in the top 15. Plus, you lost 16-3 to Virginia. Scoring 3 points on a Virginia defense that allowed 26 to William and Mary (and lost)? That’s a dealbreaker, ladies.

Similarly, the Pac-10 race is all sorts of crazy. Oregon controls their own destiny, and sits in my top 10. However, there are 5 other teams I strongly considered ranking, though only three ended up making my blogpoll ballot. I feel a little dirty about ranking Stanford so highly: at 7-4 the Cardinal have a won-loss ranking worse than Oregon State and Cal, who are ranked lower, and USC, who I leave off my ballot completely. I’ll chalk it up to human error: I overvalue Stanford after watching them take apart Oregon and USC, and didn’t get a chance to see them lose to California. And also my unexplained penchant for teams with white running backs. But Stanford is a really fun team to watch, and that gives them points in a completely meaningless poll.

Memo to the Big XII and SEC: You suck. Last year, those two conferences were the darlings of media pundits everywhere, and, in all fairness, provided 3 of the top 4 teams in college football last year (I still maintain that Texas got screwed). This year, it’s the same, with Alabama, Florida, and Texas all considered, by many, to be the best team in the NCAA. However, the depth in those conference is scary in that they have none. After Texas, the Big XII’s best team is Oklahoma State, who has never really hit their stride all season. An offense that should’ve been among the nation’s best has been merely mediocre, and losing Dez Bryant really hurt the Cowboys. As for the SEC? Ole Miss has proven themselves to be overrated frauds (and I’ll buy in here, ranking the Rebels way too high at 17) and LSU couldn’t move the ball on a high school defense. If Penn State isn’t selected to play in the Orange Bowl, I’d love to see the Lions dismantle one of those overrated teams.

Lastly: Temple is perennially my #25 team, overtaking Central Michigan following the Chippewas loss to Boston College, but this is more than just a placeholder vote. Al Golden deserves coach of the year awards for what he accomplished with the Owls this year, winners of 9 straight, who will play Ohio this Saturday for a chance to reach the MAC Championship. Gradulations, Al.

Every week, it gets harder and harder to fill out a bracket, as preseason darlings falter, and new upstarts are revealed to be paper tigers. Maybe it’s some newfound parity in college football, but outside of the top 3, it seems like anybody going down would hardly be a surprise, no matter who the opponent.

Case in point: a mediocre Texas Tech team just laid a beatdown, in Lincoln, over what looked like a strong Nebraska team. So if you have some disagreement with what you’re reading: I challenge you to make your own ballot, and get back to me when you realize just how tough it is to differentiate between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, Utah and BYU, Oregon and USC.

This job ain’t easy.

It’s still early in this 2009 season, but I’ll be bold and say it: there are no elite conferences. The SEC is no better than the Big XII or the Pac-10. The Big East’s best can tussle with the ACC’s, some teams from the MWC could beat those from the Big Ten. After the top 2 in my rankings, look at it: there are 7 conferences represented in my top 8 teams. What does that tell you? That the talking heads are full of it, and that teams ought to be recognized for their own accomplishments, not those of their conference mates.

Stunned in Lincoln. Ohio State fans must know exactly how Husker fans feel

Purdue? You romp and decimate the rest of the Big Ten, but lay your biggest egg against Purdue?! Why don’t we ever get the privilege of seeing Ohio State play like that against us?

0-3 in the ACC, Florida State fans should be used to this by now. I should start making these pictures an ongoing series.

So how exactly is the SEC not top heavy again? That conference is clearly a two horse race between ‘Bama and Florida. Everyone else is just playing for bragging rights this season. It’s surprising how all those media types still fresh off of berating the Big Ten for being a two horse race between the Buckeyes and Wolverines all those years before are now coincidentally quiet.

Even Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated was reduced to recycling the Big Ten brand of football as “boring” in his column this week,

There’s a conference like the Big Ten that plays a boring style and always wonders why it doesn’t get more respect (the Big Ten).

yet he conveniently seems to forget the sleep inducing games between South Carolina / NC State (7-3), Vanderbilt / Mississippi State (15-3), South Carolina / Ole Miss (16-10), or even LSU / Florida (13-3) all from this season. And we’re only 5 weeks in.

I guess “boring” stops applying south of the Mason Dixon line. I’ve yet to receive that memo.

Idle. Here’s a fun fact for you. Did you know Notre Dame is a few seconds from being undefeated? Yea, ESPN has been touting that horn all week in an attempt to hype up what has become an extremely one sided rivalry. What they seem to forget is that the Irish are also about 60 seconds from being 1-4. Forget the rivalry. This weekend’s game won’t even be close. USC traded punch for punch against what has proven to be one of the most dominating Buckeye defenses in recent memory and still came up on top.

Through the first few weeks of this season, we were still trying to piece together the pieces. Only a handful of schools had played other ranked teams, and it was, frankly, impossible to know which teams were for real, and which were products of an inflated preseason ranking. After six weeks, though, everything is starting to come together, and these rankings are making much more sense. With my own, I see a clear distinction between the top 2 and just about every other team, and downwards of the top 15, there’s not much difference between the teams. Though Florida finally played an opponent with a pulse, beating then-#4 LSU, they’re not doing anything to prove themselves better than Alabama, who absolutely dominated preseason darlings Ole Miss.

1

Alabama

If Alabama had started the year ranked #1, and Florida was #5, there wouldn’t be a single person voting Alabama below the Gators. After a dominating performance, smothering Jevan Snead and Ole Miss, it’s clear to me that the Tide are the best team in the country.

2

Florida

But the Fighting Tebows aren’t far behind. I was thoroughly unimpressed with Florida’s offense, but that can be excused through concussions and the fact that it was a night game in LSU. But the defense, well, it’s as good as advertised.

3

Texas

The Longhorns have to be in the #3 spot, but they’re nowhere near the class of Alabama or Florida. Those teams don’t struggle early with teams like Wyoming or Colorado—they actually trailed the Buffs at the half, 14-10 last week!

4

Virginia Tech

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Hokies are the best one-loss team in the country, and a dismantling of a decent Boston College team reinforces that belief.

5

USC

When can you excuse a loss to Washington? When the Huskies don’t look that bad—tough losses to Notre Dame and LSU belie a 3-3 record—and when you’ve shaken that off and emerged even stronger.

6

Miami (FL)

It only gets easier for the Hurricanes after a ridiculously front-loaded schedule in which they played their first 4 games against ranked teams. 3 wins vs. ranked teams gives them more than any other team in the country.

7

Cincinnati

If you told me that Cincy-USF would be one of the marquee games of week 7, I’d have called you crazy. But the Bearcats need to prove that they’re for real, and another convincing win would do just that,

8

Ohio State

I really don’t have a strong handle on just how good the Buckeyes are. They played USC dead even, but were dominated by Wisconsin last week, it was just the Badgers who couldn’t get out of their own way. We might not see how good OSU is until November 7th, when they match up with Penn State.

9

Iowa

It might sound disingenuous to say so, but I’m not convinced Iowa’s really that good. They barely snuck by a Michigan team that did everything to beat themselves (5 turnovers!), but the fact is they’re 6-0 and at the top of the Big Ten. Good for them.

10

Boise State

What is there to say about Boise that hasn’t already been said? They took advantage of an Oregon team that looked as bad as any I’ve seen, and have handled teams like Bowling Green and UC-Davis. Are they a top 10 team? Maybe. Who knows?

11

TCU

Basically, everything I said about Boise State applies to TCU, with the exception of a win in Death Valley, and at a very decent Air Force team. It’s a shame the two won’t meet up in the regular season. The WAC and MWC should combine to form a super-conference, and get BCS status.

12

Penn State

I know, it was just Illinois and Eastern Illinois, but this team looks like they’ve got their mojo back after the disappointing loss to Iowa. There’s no doubt that the Penn State team which takes the field this week against Minnesota will be a better one that the team which lost under the lights against Iowa.

13

Nebraska

It’s funny how fickle football can be. If Nebraska’s defense had been able to keep Tyrod Taylor from scrambling around for about 15 seconds, they’d be 5-0, and probably in the top 5. Instead, they’ll be resigned to losing to Texas in the Big XII Championship Game, and play in the Cotton Bowl.

14

LSU

If this were PTI, I’d be SELLING on LSU. They should have 2 losses (I hope they thanked the refs for handing them a win over Georgia) and couldn’t move the ball at all against Florida. Sure, they’re a strong football team, but they haven’t distinguished themselves as anything more.

15

Oregon

As bad as Oregon looked in the first few weeks of the season, they’ve done a great job turning the 2009 campaign around. They’ve beat two ranked teams, and dominated a sneaky-good UCLA team last week. They could give USC some trouble on Halloween.

16

Oklahoma State

It seriously scares me that I have to rank the Cowboys at #16, because I honestly don’t think they’re any good, but they’re probably better than any of the teams I’ll rank below. Are there really only 15 good teams this year?

17

Georgia Tech

Defense was optional last Saturday night, as the Yellow Jackets and Seminoles combined for over 1050 yards in Georgia Tech’s 49-44 win over Bobby Bowden. Congratulations, you win an inflated ranking and the chance to get throttled by Virginia Tech this week!

18

Notre Dame

Do I give Jimmy Claussen a shot to beat USC? Nope. But, Michigan game aside, this team has done a surprisingly good job in the clutch, and Claussen should really be in Heisman consideration. The defense, not so much.

19

Brigham Young

The MWC might be having a down year, but the Cougars can compete with any team in the country. Unfortunately, they lost a game they needed to win against FSU, and even at 11-1 wouldn’t merit BCS consideration. But the matchup with TCU should be a great game.

20

South Florida

No Matt Grothe, no problem, as the Bulls controlled Syracuse two weeks ago. Now, USF will be well rested heading into a Thursday matchup with Cincinnati that could determine the Big East championship, even in Week 7. For the Big East’s sake, root for Cincy.

21

Kansas

I really hate ranking the Jayhawks this high, because I honestly don’t think they’re any good. But they are undefeated, even if their best win is against Southern Miss. Also, Kerry Meier has 43 catches in 5 games. That seems like a shockingly high number.

22

Houston

Look, I know Houston lost to UTEP. But they’ve also beat Oklahoma State, and last week beat Mississippi State, who are at the very least an SEC team. That’s two better wins than a lot of teams have thusfar.

23

Oklahoma

I promised myself I wouldn’t rank the Sooners, what with their two losses, but it’s clear that they’re a better team than at least a dozen on this list. Honestly, I wish I could put Oklahoma around #15, but they don’t deserve it. The Sooners desperately need to beat Texas on Saturday if they want to be relevant this year.

24

South Carolina

A 5-1 team from the SEC should be ranked, right? And they did beat Ole Miss, even if that’s looking less impressive every week. Don’t like it? You find more deserving teams. Pitt? Auburn? Wisconsin? No thanks.

25

Central Michigan

There have been so many people quibbling over the terms “Seminole” and “Illini,” and even “Fighting Sioux,” but I’ve never heard anyone question Chippewa. Did you know that only the Cherokee and Navajo tribes are larger in the United States than the Chippewas?

This post season I have been putting together musical slide shows of each Phillies game in the NLDS, which concluded last night, and I decided that since I am finding it incredibly easy to do I should start doing the same thing for the Penn State games.

Short, sweet, and to the point. I am using these videos as a new way to publicize my contributions both here and on Examiner. The videos simply use selected photos from the AP.

After the jump, find out how my top 25 pans out.

This week I made a switch in my Top 25 at the top spot. After tauting the Texas Longhorns as the number one team for a few weeks, I have gone back to my original thought and placed the Florida Gators back atop my ballot. I do not feel I have enough time to really dive too deep into my poll this week though, but I still want to be sure to share my poll in brief.

Welcome back to the Sooners. With Sam Bradford taking snaps I felt they justified a one week stay in my ballot before Texas knocks them out this weekend. I will go back to digging into my poll closer next week.

EDIT: Thanks to the commenters who pointed out my typograhical error. when I wrote down my top 25 I actually did have Missouri and Nebraska in opposite spots. The error has been fixed!
