German-Asian ties no snub to US: Angela Merkel

Debra Rodriguez | 02 Июня, 2017, 01:22

Amid tensions between President Trump and European leaders, Mr. Trump is also telling people close to him that the USA will withdraw from the historic Paris climate agreement, which which former President Obama helped negotiate and 195 countries signed.

Not only does the spat continue but Merkel has seized upon it as an opportunity - in the wake of the election of Emmanuel Macron as a pro-Europe French president - to rally Europe around her leadership.

The era in which we could fully rely on others is over to some extent. Many are anxious that Germany's new perspective - along with Trump's "America First" approach to worldwide relations and the U.K.'s divorce from the European Union - threatens to upend the post-WWII order that has provided stability in Europe for more than 70 years.

India prime minister Narendra Modi today (30) backed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's "strong leadership" in uniting the European Union at a time the economic grouping showed signs of strain over the UK's decision to exit it and the protectionist stance adopted by USA president Donald Trump.

Merkel, among other European leaders, was sharply critical of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision at the recent G-7 meeting in Sicily not to reiterate support for the 2015 Paris agreement to combat climate change.

Merkel acknowledges her comments may have taken on added significance after Trump's visit to Europe, but that's not her fault, according to a German government official.

Mr Spicer's appearance came following confirmation that White House communications director Mike Dubke resigned from his post after less than three months in the job, amid widespread expectations that a broader shake-up of the White House communications team could be imminent as the Trump administration seeks to limit the damage unleashed by an onslaught of revelations about the administration's links with Russian Federation.
